From the Publisher
Welcome to Thinking Bigger Business Media . . .

(formerly Kansas City Small Business Monthly Inc.)

We’re pleased that you are considering using our media products to deliver your marketing message to a group of such dynamic, engaged and growing small businesses.

For nearly 20 years, our company has served this niche market in Kansas City—we publish the only publications and products that focus exclusively on small, privately held companies entering the next phases of growth.

So, what is a small business? That’s a question I get asked a lot, and I’ve discovered over the years that the definition is elusive, even controversial. Is it number of employees? Is it annual revenues? And what is the “number” that defines the threshold for either?

About 18 months ago, as we were taking a hard look at who reads our monthly magazine, we decided to try to define small business anyway. The one thing we discovered is that our readers share the desire to grow their businesses.

And the reason they are turning to our media products—our magazines, Web sites, radio shows, events, electronic newsletters and online calendar—is that they are looking for information and resources to take their businesses to the next level. They are "small businesses" that are thinking bigger—they possess a passion for achieving something greater than their current experience.

What the definition really comes down to for us, and for our readers, is a mindset, not a number. Numbers carry limitations. A mindset knows no boundaries. Numbers report today’s reality. A mindset embraces a vision. Many businesspeople we talked with, for example, own companies that fit a traditional definition of small business in terms of number of employees or annual revenues. But those business owners don’t consider their companies “small businesses.” Their sights are trained on building businesses that are much larger.

So . . . we decided to think bigger ourselves and to make some changes that would more aptly reflect the group of innovative, forward-thinking businesses we serve. In particular, we wanted to publish a monthly magazine and other media products that portray these businesses as the true powerhouses they are.

The result? We’ve changed the name of our company to Thinking Bigger Business Media to capture the mindset of our products and our readers. And we've changed the name of the monthly magazine from Kansas City Small Business Monthly to KC Small Business, with a bold new logo reflecting the strength of small business. The magazine's new tagline—Smart Companies Thinking BiggerSM—captures the mindset of our products and our readers.

And that’s not all . . . We’ve also introduced a complete redesign of the monthly magazine; scheduled a circulation audit with the Audit Bureau of Publications; upgraded our Web site at iThinkBiggerKC.com; created BIG (Business Ideas Group), a city-wide group of business owners who come together to share best practices; introduced a Thinking Bigger Webinar learning series . . . and more.

We’re thinking bigger . . . the business owners who use our media products are thinking bigger . . . and we challenge you to think bigger by partnering with us to deliver your message to this desirable audience.

Sincerely,

Kelly Scanlon
