The Muddle in the Middle
“Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way.” -George Patton
If we believe what Patton says, it appears we only have three simple choices in 2008, doesn’t it? You can:
1. Find someone you respect, trust and can make you better—and then soak up every ounce of knowledge from them as you can.
2. Be a leader who gains the respect and trust of others by caring enough to ask them questions and then actually listening to what they think and feel. 3. Or, float somewhere in the middle, neither fully committing to the great leader who can help you, nor actively seeking out coaching opportunities with those who are in need of your support and knowledge.
Unfortunately, too many of us hover in that third space. And by doing so, everyday we miss multiple opportunities to either learn from or to influence others, missing an opportunity to change our organizations. This week, seek out a mentor who can make you smarter and more productive. And then go one step further and find someone you can coach. Assuming both of these roles will help you create a LEARNING and TEACHING organization.
