What's the Big Idea?
"If I can do it, believe me, anybody can do it." ~ David Oreck

Do you think it’s too late? Are you too old to “go for it?” Too tired to try something new, too comfortable to go through the hassles? Well if you’re like this week’s radio guest, David Oreck, inventor of the Oreck Vacuum Cleaner, you haven’t even begun to reach your potential. In fact, Mr. Oreck’s new beginning didn’t come until after the age of 40 when he had the wacky idea of creating a vacuum cleaner that weighed only 8 pounds and could suck up a bowling ball! And by acting on that silly idea, David has gone on to create one of the most recognized brands in consumer appliances. And at 84, we still see him on our television sets passionately selling it to the world.

Now here is the good news. David Oreck has nothing on you. And he would tell you the same thing. The only difference between this top performer and the average person is that David ACTED on his idea. He didn’t brush it off as silly and believe nobody would listen to him. So here’s my question for you. What is YOUR big idea? What’s in your head that is going to make you famous in your company, department or industry? And here is the truth…you, like everybody around you has at least one BIG IDEA. But average folks, unlike top performers, are afraid to share it with the people around them.

So here is what I am asking. I want you to schedule 60 minutes this week to come up with one BIG IDEA that you believe can make your company amazing. And then I want you to act on it. Don’t keep in on your computer, your brain or the napkin you wrote it on. Get it out. Don’t apologize for the idea, but instead deliver it to others with clarity and enthusiasm. And be prepared for “the look” from others, but don’t let it stop you. Because if this BIG IDEA doesn’t get you noticed, your next one will. And eventually those looks of doubt will turn to looks of appreciation.

Let me give you a brief example. Several years ago when I told people I was going to write a sales book, at least half the people looked at me like I was nuts. Those looks planted seeds of doubt in my head, but I went for it anyway. Now here we are a few years later and that BIG IDEA has changed my life. And yours will too…I promise! Because by forcing yourself to discover and act on what’s in that head of yours, your career is about to take you places that you never dreamed possible.
