Business
: Civil Engineering Consulting
The
Business
: VSM Engineering, LLC provides general civil engineering services for local capital projects. Typical services include planning, design, analysis, construction plans and construction management for municipal infrastructure projects. Other services include municipal engineering, storm water design, project management and quality control reviews. VSM Engineering is a women business enterprise (WBE) with 22 years of experience on capital projects.
Challenge
: Several Web sites were helpful for various local and state governments, but the federal government was a little more difficult to navigate. I took a class called “Winning Government Contracts: The First Steps” through the Missouri Procurement Technical Assistance Center, which was helpful for federal contracts. Scheduling the office visit from the city of Kansas City, Mo., took several weeks. The visit went smoothly because I had asked the reviewer for a list of her questions ahead of time. I had copies of my paperwork and quick access to my financial records, if requested.
Advice
: Do one thing every day for your certification, such as collect a piece of data, run copies of tax returns or make a telephone call. Keep a duplicate of every piece of paper you submit. Also, get a certification from a local organization first. That way, you can go to an office and talk face-to-face with someone if you need help. An analyst with the Kansas City, MO., Human Relations Department did a five-minute quality check to ensure that I had everything I needed before starting their review. I also found them helpful when I called in advance for an appointment versus just showing up at their office.
