Type of Business: Safety
Year Founded: 1998

Craig Safety Technologies Inc. was founded in 1998 in Brenda Craig's basement as Craig Safety, a consulting business advising clients about safety issues. Earlier this year, the company became a safety software company and the consulting side was sold. Craig Safety Technologies provides proprietary compliance and fleet management software to various organizations in the ready-mix concrete, asphalt, distribution, moving and storage and construction industries.

Craig Safety Technologies is a certified woman-owned business by the city of Kansas City, Mo., and has worked on city projects, such as construction at city hall and the police academy. In addition, the company has conducted training for city employees.

Support System
My support comes from other women entrepreneurs and the memory of my mother and father. I am fortunate that my father was a successful entrepreneur and so I have that in me. I recall that when my dad was building his company, it was said that my mother loaded the gun and my dad shot it. I remember the things she always said to him and those words are encouraging for me. I also recall that at Stephens College, they repeatedly said we could do anything men could do. That has been an inspiration, as well.

Social Wealth
I have enjoyed helping and supporting Safe Home, Hope House and the American Royal. We recently offered our services free to the Church of the Resurrection on their $30 million construction project and to Habitat for Humanity, where we trained their people about safety. As a company, we also have served lunch at Cross-Lines.

Personal Wealth
I've gained experience and knowledge about who I am as a person. Through my business, I have enjoyed growing and challenging myself to open up new opportunities.

Financing
Craig Safety was founded with funds from family and friends and personal money—without borrowing.

Community Wealth
The most rewarding aspect of owning an OSHA Department of Transportation compliance business is how it impacts me, and the community as a whole. It has been my desire to reduce accidents in the workplace, as well as lower workers' compensation claims for companies. The impact of this affects the bottom line of organizations by reducing insurance costs and hopefully sending people home in the same shape they came to work in.

Challenge
This year we reengineered Craig Safety Technologies to be an e-commerce compliance safety business. It was challenging learning more about software applications and going from direct sales to telemarketing sales. We also pushed to become more national in scope and we have.
