“I really like that restaurant. The food is great and it’s ‘schmoodewah.’”
Those are the words that my sister used to describe Room 39 at Mission Farms in Leawood, after our recent lunch visit. In my family, there is no higher compliment for a place than “schmoodewah.” It means fancy, elegant and really, really nice.
Room 39 at Mission Farms is fabulous. The bright and comfortable dining room provides an extremely pleasant lunchtime atmosphere. The staff is exceptionally friendly and attentive, without smothering customers. Yet the best surprise is that the restaurant is not stuffy, nor overly expensive. I’m not sure how the owners have pulled it off, but Room 39 is peaceful enough for a working lunch, impressive enough to entertain an important client and relaxed enough for a fun Friday lunch with coworkers.
Located on the grounds of the original Saddle and Sirloin Club at 105th and Mission Road in Leawood, Room 39 at Mission Farms opened in the summer of 2007. It is the second Room 39 restaurant in the Kansas City metro area operated by chefs and co-owners Ted Habiger and Andy Sloan. The original Room 39 opened to rave reviews in November 2004 at 1719 W. 39th St. in Kansas City, Mo., where it continues to be a popular destination.
The chefs at Room 39 focus on providing menu items made with fresh and locally grown ingredients. The basic lunch menu changes with each season and is supplemented with daily specials. This philosophy of creating a changeable menu around seasonal foods results in a delicious collection of dining options for Room 39 customers.
My sister selected one of the daily specials, the Short Rib Sloppy Joe ($11). Certainly not our mom’s basic ground beef with barbeque sauce sandwich, this sloppy joe was a gourmet delight. The marinated rib meat was tender and succulent. It was mixed together with caramelized onions, goat cheese and sautéed mushrooms and served on toasted focaccia. “Roommade” fries completed this excellent dish.
Figuring that salads are the real test of whether a restaurant truly serves fresh food, I opted to order from Room 39’s seasonal menu and selected the house salad and a cup of homemade soup. I must say that it was a great move on my part. The soup was made of pureed butternut squash with pepitas and crème fraîche ($3.50 cup; $5 bowl). It was exceptional, with a wonderfully creamy texture and a hint of curry flavor. The house salad was equally as fresh and delicious ($6). It featured a very nice combination of mixed greens with citrus-tarragon vinaigrette, toasted walnuts, cucumbers, roasted beets and grana padano cheese. I inhaled every bit of it.
Since our family doesn’t believe in skipping dessert, my sister and I checked out the daily offerings. We decided to share an order of the crème brulee ($4). Served in a small ramekin, this delicious vanilla custard was topped with a thin crust of caramelized sugar. It was an outstanding choice, particularly when paired with Room 39’s Danesi espresso, an Italian coffee served only in a few Kansas City restaurants.
I highly recommend that you check out Room 39 at Mission Farms. With its continuously changing menu and commitment to providing customers with a high quality menu, the culinary surprises are almost limitless. You can return to Room 39 again and again to experience something new that is fresh, fabulous and delicious.
Hours: Lunch is served at the Leawood restaurant Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch hours at the 39th Street location in Midtown are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday. The Midtown location also serves breakfast from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Dinner hours at the Leawood and Midtown locations are 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Both Room 39 locations are closed on Sunday. Menus are available online at www.rm39.com.
